Word Wall vs Sound Wall

Do you know the difference between a “word wall” and a “sound wall”?

A word wall is “a collection of words which are displayed in large visible letters on a wall, bulletin board, or other display surface in a classroom.” They are usually arranged by first letter.

Word Wall

But that word wall is only an effective tool if the students can read or decode the words.

A sound wall works in conjunction with the explicit teaching of the phonemes – the sounds in language.

Sound Wall

The video here will explore the benefits of changing to a sound wall.
